Blackest Night #3 Cameo: The Unknown Soldier

Posted by: Maggie_C on: October 12, 2009

So the dead have been rising all summer – and in the DCU there’s  a whole helluva lot of dead folk. In issue number three, the current Firestorm makes it to JLA headquarters only to see Black Lantern attacks playing out on ALL of their monitors. And in Washington, D.C.?

Yup. That’d be the Black Lantern Unknown Soldier. Frak me. Of course, the panel is referencing DC’s Unknown Soldier, but even so – it got me wondering; are the Black Lanterns targeting just the metahumans, the cape & tights crew, and their rogues? Or are completely normal civilians being overrun by dead relatives and friends too?

It’s one thing to have dead heroes return, or to have their deceased friends and loved ones come back, but to imagine that this is happening indiscriminately to EVERYONE?

Man. Is Earth 1 is fucked or what?

*Also, I wonder whether this truly is just a cameo or if he’s somehow going to come into play later.

I’ve been wondering the same things. We’ve seen Black Lanterns attacking the cops in Gotham and random citizens of Smallville, so they’re clearly not just targeting the capes and tights crowd. If they are going after everyone, there must be some reason to focus on killing so many heroes when it would be much easier to get hearts from a panicked public.
